The Resolution 2

by King Jesudunmo Longe

I read it somewhere that a 2002 study found that each January, roughly one in three Americans resolve to better themselves in some way. While about 75% of people stick to their goals for at least a week, less than a half (46%) are still on target six months later. If you have read the poem above, then you understand where I am coming from and where I am going to in this blog post, if you have not read the poem, please scroll back up and read the poem.

Wikipedia defines New Year’s resolution in the strange way (you can check it up later) but the ample part states that a tradition in which a person makes a promise to do an act of self improvement beginning from New Year’s Day. Let us start with a fundamental question: WHAT MAKES A NEW YEAR?  I would like to make this as simple as possible; a “new year” is made up of two words “new” and “year”. The dictionary defines new as: recently made or created; additional; recently discovered;  young ; recently arrived or appeared .it is used to distinguish something established more recently named after something or someplace previously existing. But I love the definition that states that: (of a period of time) next or about to begin or recently begun. The first definition of the word “year” is the time it takes the earth to complete one revolution of the sun (between 365.24 and 365.26 days depending on the point of reference). Another definition is a period between SET DATES THAT MARK A YEAR e.g. from January 1 to December 1 by the Gregorian calendar. The definition that I want to resonate in your mind is “a scheduled part of calendar year spent in a specific activity.”  And the last definition is “a proportion of a creature’s lifespan equivalent to one year of an average human lifespan”. So although general parlance in times like this would mean a one thing, we understand that a year could mean more than January 1 – December 31st of a year. It could be a date you select till 12 months after,or your birthday date to the next birthday date.As long as it starts  at a new day to another new day with 12 months in between …It is a year and it’s new (to you).

Before this story gets painfully long, let me state that in my frank opinion, I do not like new year resolutions  because asides the repeated fails that occur in its execution, it is a rarity for it to be 100 percent resolution success(although nothing is impossible). The truth is New Year resolutions may work because it all seems like a time to start afresh, but please a birthdate(birthday) till another is clearly a new year… after all,it is a day to a week then to a month, before it would make a year, so do not be mentally constrained into thinking that only new year resolutions would work as what really works is decision making and DISCIPLINE. However, to the one who seeks to make a New Year resolution this year, I do hope you succeed and if you do not, take my advice and understand that at any point in the year you can decide to improve and begin the journey. It is never too early or late to make LIFE resolutions. Seek to improve yourself everyday of your life and do not tense yourself by the world’s calendar…A day/week/month/year can be special just because you have decided to make it so. Point is resolutions can be made,New year or not, what matters is that you follow it up till the… I end in the words of a humble writer who discovered in an adult childhood moment that:

“A YEAR IS TWELVE MONTHS… PLAN… IT NEED NOT BE NEW

LOOSE LIMITS… A YEAR AGO NEED NOT BE JANUARY TO DECEMBER”

Happy New Year!!!

I love you and wish you a great year ahead, resolution or not.
